REE are used in many applications and products all over the world. The global mine REE production volume rose significantly during the last 20 years and the global market is expected to grow at a 9.1% CAGR until 2030 to reach USD15,473 Million.Among the global volume of REE used in the world, China has a monopoly with 60% of REE produced and 85% of REE refined.European Union must react to be self-sufficient by investing in innovative technologies of separation of REE.In 2020, 29,4% of the REE are used in magnets, the global market for REE in magnets is expected to grow at CAGR of 6,1% over 2022-2027. As a consequence the recycling of magnets is an additional way towards the European REE independancy.

The innovation

REMEDY is an electrochemical method using the difference of magnetic susceptibility between the REEs (adjacent or not) in solution to separate them selectively and produce REO powders.
Today, the solvent separation processes requires a large number of separation stages, specifically for adjacent REEs. The difference of magnetic properties between REEs is an additional lever to simplify the separation process, decrease the number of separation steps and thus reduce the operating cost.

The applications

REMEDY is an ideal process for mining actors to improve their productivity.
Selective separation of at least one REE element from a mining mixture
High purity of extracted element
Improve the competitivity of separation processes external to China

The highly efficient separation of Dy | Tb | Nd | Pr by REMEDY is tailor-made for magnet recycling. It could simplify and improve the effectiveness of the separation for:
Recycling of magnet production scrap that cannot be directly re-used in the magnet production
End of life recycling of magnets after waste processing (hydrothermal...)
The features

Discontinuous SelectivityUnlike solvent extraction which separates each element, starting from lightest to heaviest, or the reverse, REMEDY process separates the most paramagnetic elements first, such as Dy or Gd, followed by the family of Nd-Pr. The diamagnetic ions, Sc3+, Y3+, and La3+ preferentially remain in solution.
Purification CapabilitiesThe innovative process can achieve high purity in a few steps. The process uses only aqueous nitrate-based solutions, which are compatible with existing solvent extraction processes, and has the advantage that no organic solvents are used.
Typical Electricity CostsThe primary operational cost is the electrical transformation of the solution of REE into a purified oxide. The electrical cost is around 0.1 - 0.2 €/kg of oxide produced per processing step.Table 1 on the right highlights the process costs for separating REE₁ from a mixture of REE₂:REE₁ or REE₃:REE₁.
*Assuming 50 €/MWh wholesale electricity price
Other Element | REE₁ In | REE₁ Out | Cost* |
---|---|---|---|
/ | Weight % | Weight % | €/kg |
REE₂ | 54 | 99.9 | 0.13 |
REE₃ | 53 | 92.9 | 0.22 |

CEO - Innovation to Value
«Remedy is a new concept for REE separation based on magnetic properties. Some adjacent REE very difficult to separate with the classic solvent processes could be easily separated . Remedy could simplify and increase the effectiveness of REE separation processes.»
